Charcoal absorbs very little heat and has a high level of reflectivity, preventing dissipation, meaning less time and energy reaching the required temperature. Charcoal blocks are a traditional jeweler's base on which to solder and their versatility makes them an essential part of any jeweler's workbench. Broken pieces can be reused and old pieces can renewed with a little sanding. Pins can be pushed easily into the surface, allowing items to be supported prior to soldering.
Basic shapes can also be carved out of the charcoal block and used to melt small pieces of metal, making them ideal for techniques such as granulation. To retain the shape of the block and increase its longevity, wrap the sides tightly with binding wire.
